Tips to installing Type 5 DIY stainless handrails for stairs

Type 5 stainless steel wall mounted handrails with curved brackets are easy to install. It is just a matter of attaching the brackets to your wall with simple fixing and securing the stainless handrail to them.

Step 1.

Set out the position of the curved brackets. If you are installing the handrail on a cavity wall, be sure that you locate the studs before you begin. Mark and drill one screw hole and pre-drill the fastener before temporarily screwing on the curved brackets. Use anchor bolts or similar when fixing the brackets to concrete. Begin by screwing the bracket onto the wall with one screw. This allows you to rotate the wall bracket to cradle the handrail tube as required.

Step 2.

Locate the timber studs (cavity wall) and measure the distance of your handrail.

Step 3.

Cut the handrail tube to length using either a metal cutting saw or a drop saw with an abrasive blade. File off any burrs and polish out the burr marks using a 3M scourer or similar. Never use steel wool as this will cause discolouration of the stainless handrail.

Step 4.

Attach the handrail to the curved brackets using electrical cable ties. Mark the location of the drill holes using a permanent marker. Lift the handrail off the curved brackets and centre punch the holes.

Step 5.

If purchased, use the cutting compound supplied with the optional installation kit when drilling the holes in the handrail tube.

Step 6.

Tap the end caps into the handrail tube.

Step 7.

Fix the curved brackets to the handrail tube with either stainless wafer screws or stainless pop rivets, if desired.

Step 8.

Screw the curved plates with attached handrail to the wall.

If you are using mirror polished tube be careful to avoid any scratches or damage.
If you are using satin finished tube, slight imperfections can be rubbed out using the 3M scourers.
If the handrail is more than 1.5m in length we recommend inserting intermediate brackets.
