Tips to installing Type 3 DIY stainless handrails for stairs

Type 3 staircase handrails with adjustable elbow joiners are easy to install. It is just a matter of attaching the base plates to your stairs with simple fixing and pushing the stainless handrail fittings together for that strong and permanent look.

Step 1.

First you need to temporarily place the end base plates in position. Then insert the end posts and adjustable joiners into the posts. This will give you a guide as to how the handrail will look.

Step 2.

Attach the bases to your stairs. If you are installing your handrail on a timber staircase, drill the screw holes and pre-drill the fasteners before screwing on the base plates. Use dynabolts, or similar anchor bolts, when fixing the tall bases to concrete. For a neater look, consider base plate covers when using dynabolts or similar as the concrete fasteners.

Step 3.

Place your posts on the base plates and check that your posts are vertical using a spirit level. You may need to pack up the bases with a stainless steel washer or similar if your posts are not vertical. Place cover plates over the bases, if required.

Step 4.

Attach the adjustable elbow joiner to the lower post and the mitre corner adjustable elbow joiner to the upper post. Measure the required length of handrail tube from the shoulders of the adjustable elbows.

Step 5.

Cut the handrail tube to length using either a metal cutting saw or a drop saw with an abrasive blade. File off any burrs and polish out the burr marks using a 3M scourer or similar. Never use steel wool as this will cause discolouration of the stainless handrail.

Step 6.

Centre punch and drill the holes for the stainless wafer screws or stainless pop rivets to go into. These will fix the posts and handrail tube to the elbow joiners.

NOTES:

If you are using mirror polished tube be careful to avoid any scratches or damage.
If you are using satin finished tube, slight imperfections can be rubbed out using the 3M scourers.
If the handrail is more than 1.5m in length we recommend inserting intermediate posts and bases.
We can cut your handrail tube to length provided we know the angle of the stairs.
However, we cannot guarantee that it will fit exactly and you may have to adjust the position of your posts.
