STAINLESS WIRE BALUSTRADE CHANGES DEFFERED

AAA Metal Suppliers welcomes the announcement by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) not to support changes to the National Construction Code Balustrade provisions for 2013.

The Board's decision to undertake a review of international standards, obtain more specific injury data on falls from wire rope balustrades, undertake further consultation with industry and health experts and review the cost and benefit impacts is a sensible and positive development.

AAA Metal Suppliers and other stainless wire balustrade suppliers have highlighted the deficiencies in the data and assumptions used in the analysis, the reduced choice for consumers, the increased cost and no research on alternative options.

AAA Metal Suppliers looks forward to working with the Australian Building Codes Board to reduce the risk of falls by young children in both new and established dwellings.

The stainless steel balustrading industry has a strong desire to supply safe, effective structures that meet the concerns raised by the ABCB and the clear desire of the public for the option of horizontal stainless wire balustrades and barriers.

Stainless steel balustrading is long lasting, cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing. DIY balustrade kits have been installed to provide fall protection along open-sided walking surfaces including porches, decks, balconies, stairs, ramps and landings by thousands of Australians for more than 30 years.
